I could barely concentrate on anything, other than trying to relieve the pain by lifting my feet, by pushing down on my hands, when the teacher was turning the other way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">I wore bulky hand splints to keep my wrists straight. But this would make my hands spasm more frequently and my fingertips would dig into the fibreglass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">The long full length callipers with lots of straps held my legs firmly in place, but I walked like a robot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">I hated them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">When I went to the toilet because the tops of the callipers came up to the top of my thighs, and I would always end up wee-ieng on my pants, because they weren\u2019t pulled down far enough.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Darker places<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(Dianne Reid, 2003)<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a noise in the hallway, and he leaves the room for a minute\u2026<\/p>\n<p>She pulls her hands free, pulls the tape off, runs out of the room\u2026<\/p>\n<p>into the front room,<\/p>\n<p>into the corner.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She has picked up the stick he brought with him.<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s pressing herself into the corner,<\/p>\n<p>trying to press herself wafer thin, to slide behind the cupboard,<\/p>\n<p>trying to melt into the wall, into the darkness.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Her mind is running fast away but her body is frozen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a flashlight on her.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>she was next to the door\u2026<\/p>\n<p>she was right next to the door\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>Xena conversation with Mel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">(Melinda Smith, 2016)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Hey, Mel!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">Just thinking\u2026 I\u2019m a bit tired of sitting here, while you have all the fun\u2026without me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">I mean, it\u2019s great.
