It was a small but captivated audience at the Toff in Town venue but I kept thinking of how she would have resonated in the gorgeous Melbourne Recital Centre (where I heard\/saw The Necks just over a week ago)\u00a0I found Jo Quail&#8217;s music a couple of years ago and, since, it has been inspiring much choreography and fuelling hours of improvisation.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what I wrote on the tram ride home last night after the show&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>&#8220;She dances her loop pedals like a prima ballerina doing her petit batterie (but with a tango touch).<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>The layers build like an epoch, a single cell, a fragment of DNA that sets up a ghostly foundation upon which civilizations rise and emigrate, seasons pass, tides rise and recede, landscapes bloom and decay.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>Now and then she smiles,<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em> eyes closed,<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em> as though spying a long lost friend,<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em> or recalling some exquisite taste.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>She builds each piece like a live film edit<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em> dropping in a crucial shot<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em> an extreme close up of a sleeping body<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em> the rise of a sword<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em> a sharp inhale<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em> flocks of birds spiralling<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em> the edge of the world<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em> a lunar eclipse<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em> a whisper<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>wringing out a bloody cloth<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><em> pouring grain through her hands.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jo Quail - The Falconer\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ph7Vfm_otLo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I saw\/heard Jo Quail last night, UK based cellist\/composer visiting Australia just now.
